The CIT Conference

Keith Cagle: Hey!  It’s great to see you all here!
Leslie Greer: Yes it is!
Gino Gouby: Yes!
Keith Cagle: So, what's been going on with you?
Leslie Greer: Oh, wait!  Let me introduce myself.  My name is Leslie Greer.  My title is Director of Public Relations and Outreach.
Keith Cagle: Hi, I'm Keith Cagle. My title is ASLTA Evaluation and Certification Chair.  I’ve been the chair for 11 years.
Gino Gouby: I’m Gino Gouby.  I am the director of CIT’s Professional Development Program.  Leslie , speaking of the PD, do you know when the CIT Conference is?
Leslie Greer: Yes! it is this coming October on the seventeenth to the twenty first.  Keith, did you know it?
Keith Cagle: It's right here in Charlotte which is great!

Leslie Greer: Yes, your hometown is really nice.
Keith Cagle: Yes, that’s correct.  It’s the same time as…
Leslie Greer: So what’s Charlotte famous for?
Keith Cagle: Oh, it’s famous for NASCAR!
Leslie Greer: Oh I see.
Keith Cagle: It’s really close to where we are right now only about five miles away.
Gino Gouby: Oh it is pretty close!
Keith Cagle: You can actually go there, and you can even ride in a NASCAR car! I think it costs around $90.
Leslie Greer:Not bad price!
Keith Cagle: So you can get a taste of what it feels like, while riding in the fast lane.
Leslie Greer: (interrupts) Do we drive? or we are passengers?.
Keith Cagle: No, no. They drive and you sit in the passenger’s seat.
Leslie Greer: Oh drat! I want to drive! What about you, Gino?
Gino Gouby: No, I am bad at that kind of thing. I’m a chicken.
Keith Cagle: Me too. I haven’t ever driven one. I have not checked that off my bucket list.
Leslie Greer: Well, what else is well known?
Keith Cagle: Anyway…what’s well known?  There are so many things!
Leslie Greer: Oh wait, isn’t NC famous for tabacco plants?
Keith Cagle: That’s eastern part of North Carolina.. Banking! You know, Bank of America. The headquarters of the Bank of America is in downtown Charlotte.
Leslie Greer and Gino Gouby: Oh I see.
Keith Cagle: They are also famous for the Carowind amusement park which is south of Charolette.  The conference is northeast of Charlotte. There are a few places around Charolette.. When the CIT conference finishes, we can go visit the mountains in the west.  We can also travel east to see the beach. Both are really nice places.
Leslie Greer:  That’s cool.
Gino Gouby: Sure.
Keith Cagle: So tell me about this CIT conference that is coming up?  When is it?
Leslie Greer: It is October 17-21st.
Keith Cagle: Wow, and only about 8 months later, we will have the National Professional Development ASLTA conference  and will held here at the very same hotel.  Imagine that!
Gino Gouby: That’s great. Same?
Keith Cagle: Yes.
Gino Gouby: That’s nice!
Leslie Greer: It’s perfect! Yes, just perfect! That means people won’t complain about coming again because they can get double CEUs in the short term.
Keith Cagle: Yes.  That’s true.
Gino Gouby: True.  Also, there are CEUs offered for a variety of workshops this year.  Historically  the CIT conference was limited to teachers only, right?
Leslie Greer: Yes. I heard that too. Is that your understanding as well?
Keith Cagle: Well, now I think it is open to anyone who is interested in the fields of Interpreting and American Sign Language.
Leslie Greer: Oh, okay. It is the same as the  ASLTA people thought in the past, that it was limited to American Sign Language teachers only.  But you’re saying that’s not the case.
Gino Gouby: Yes, it is open for all..
Leslie Greer: So who specifically?
Gino Gouby: Teachers, mentors, workshop leaders, ASL teachers, Interpreting teachers, and trainers.
Leslie Greer: Also researchers.
Keith Cagle: Right.
Leslie Greer: Researchers for both fields, ASL and interpreting.
Gino Gouby: That’s right!
Keith Cagle: Actually many of us here teach interpreting and ASL. We are usually in the same program.
Leslie Greer: Yes! That’s true!
Keith Cagle: Sometimes, I teach ASL and interpreting classes also.
Leslie Greer: Me too.
Gino Gouby: Yeah.
Keith Cagle: A few hearing professors teach interpreting and some ASL classes. Both Deaf and hearing teachers benefit at the same.  They work as a team. In my program, the ASL and interpreting professor’s work together to help students succeed. It’s a fact!
Gino Gouby: Exactly.
Leslie Greer: ASLTA’s and CIT’s goal is to have a standard quality of signing and to be able to repair communication breakdowns. This doesn’t mean only teachers. It involves ASL teachers, Interpreting teachers, mentors, workshop presenters, researchers, linguists; the list goes on and on. Come and join us!
Keith Cagle: We will see you soon!
Leslie Greer: Join CIT and ASLTA!
Gino Gouby: See you soon!
