Summary

The Professional Development Specialist (PDS) will work under the direction of an Education, Professional Development and Training (Edu) Program Manager. The Edu Department supports a culture of life-long learning, celebrating diversity, and is seeking an individual to support the development and provision of training courses, materials, and curricula primarily to and for Sorenson interpreters. Our goal is to facilitate learners in acquiring knowledge, skills and competencies in an effective and enjoyable manner. This is a dynamic and fast-paced position that supports many facets of programs and projects being offered and developed within the Education, Professional Development & Training Department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Edu Program Manager on projects and initiatives as assigned
  • Apply tested instructional design theories, practice, and methods
  • Work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to design and develop objective-based learning, classroom or virtual training instructions, participant and leader guides, interactive exercises, follow-up coaching and support materials
  • Develop engaging training content using a variety of instructional techniques and formats such as simulations, team exercises, group discussions or activities, self-paced eLearning, videos, lectures, and blended learning for a diverse workforce
  • Work on an assigned team with a specialized focus while contributing as needed to workshop/training provision, skill set assessment, language and interpreting mentoring, interpersonal dynamics and interpreter education projects
  • Serves as a trusted training resource and ensures that training materials, programs, and services reflect the goals of the department and
  • Other duties asassigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Required

  • Superior interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact in a cooperative and professional manner with team members as well as internal and external customers to deliver quality service to meet department objectives and
  • Knowledge of instructional design and development principles
  • Experience developing and/or creating software simulations, videos, podcasts, vlogs, job aids, eLearning modules–a range of alternatives to create virtual learning environments
  • Experience in interpreter education and/or mentoring to support a learner-centered, service approach for adult learners
  • Ability to create and provide written reports and business communication
  • Fluency in presenting and teaching in American Sign Language
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic setting
  • Ability to think and work independently and as part of a team to share their expertise and best practices while managing time and resources to meet customer expectations and deadlines
  • Working knowledge and experience with MS Excel, Word, Power Point,
  • An expertise in any of the following areas: curriculum development with a working knowledge and experience developing work-based training in collaborative environments using Adobe Connect, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, and WebEx; or knowledge of video, lighting, etc. for virtual learning and a working knowledge of Final Cut

Experience/Education/Certifications Required

  • 3+ years’ experience mentoring, providing workshops, training and teaching language and interpreting skill sets
  • 4+ years working experience as a sign language interpreter or Deaf Interpreter in a variety of settings
  • 3-5 years of instructional design and/or training curriculum creation experience for web-based and instructor-led trainings a bonus
  • Certification and/or proof of training in disciplines involving human dynamics, organizational psychology, soft skills, etc. strongly desired
  • Experience with curriculum building and development
  • Comprehensive Certificate from a national interpreter certifying entity (RID CSC, CI/CT, CDI, NIC or NAD Level IV or V) and/or comprehensive state certification granted through a certifying entity such as a Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing strongly preferred
  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree
  • Solid understanding of the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct

Other General Requirements/Additional Notes

  • Ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language and English
  • Ability to travel in the contiguous United States and Canada, as needed
  • Ability to manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously
  • Positive attitude, team player, good interpersonal communication skills and able to work collaboratively across company
  • Must be able to satisfy requirements for a drug-screen, criminal background check to qualify for employment.
