Mt. San Jacinto Community College District seeks an American Sign Language (ASL) Instructor to teach and develop courses in American Sign Language and oversee the Interpreter Preparation Program (IPP). This is a tenure­track 10 month academic position. Full­time faculty are typically assigned 15 lecture hours (or the equivalent in laboratory, studio or related activities) of student contact time. Office hours are also required. Faculty are expected to participate in college governance through Academic Senate appointments to standing councils, committees, and/or a variety of task forces. Teaching assignments may include a mixture of day, evening, multi­campus, and off­campus classes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional experience; OR any associate’s degree and six (6) years of professional experience; OR the equivalent.
2. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff
Note: Foreign transcripts and degrees must include an evaluation by a United States clearing house. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Strong academic preparation in American Sign Language as evidenced by undergraduate and graduate level coursework; including at minimum an earned associate’s degree in American Sign Language, English, Linguistics, Deaf Studies and/or Interpreting.
• Demonstrated ability to teach American Sign Language courses from basic to advanced levels of language acquisition, as well as courses in the Interpreter Preparation Program
• Experience in program and curriculum development
• Recent (within the last 3 years) teaching experience in ASL and IPP at an accredited community college.
• Demonstrated commitment to diverse teaching methods and learning styles, particularly as applied to the learning of American Sign Language and interpreting.
• Evidence of a strong commitment to remain current in ASL/IPP and the instruction of ASL/IPP
• Demonstrated commitment to community college education, as demonstrated in personal and/or professional experience.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching (enthusiasm, knowledge of subject matter, student motivational skills and ability to teach students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds).
• Interest in and/or ability to use relevant and modern technology in American Sign Language instruction, including mediated and on­line instruction (including Blackboard and/or Canvas). Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to such issues of diversity as academic preparedness, culture, gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic circumstances, and disability. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and students
• Evidence of ability to run ASL department faculty meetings with ASL/IPP faculty

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The salary range is from $48,061.97 ­ $94,108.38 annually, not to exceed step five (5) on the assigned salary schedule. Placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with education and experience. Step five (5) may be exceeded if the District determines an extraordinary need or circumstances warrant the higher placement. This Academic assignment requires 196 service days per academic year. Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance is made available, and a sizable District contribution is provided. Sick leave is earned at the rate of one day per month. STRS participation is required for retirement. As a condition of employment candidates will be required to complete a live scan for fingerprint clearance and a Tuberculosis (TB) test.
While the current vacancy is expected to be at the Menifee Valley Campus, applicants may be assigned to the San Jacinto Campus or any District facility.
The start date for this position will be Fall, 2017 (August). Additional openings that become available prior to the end of the hiring process may also be filled from the qualified applicants.
